Airtrain carries in excess of 1.5 million passengers each year and is the greener way to transfer to and from Brisbane Airport. Each train takes up to 500 cars off the road and reduces congestion on Brisbane’s increasingly crowded roads. It is widely known that trains are 3.9 times more energy efficient than cars with considerable greenhouse gas savings. Ninety percent of transport greenhouse gasses are attributed to cars while only 2.5% is attributed to rail.
Research conducted by The University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology shows that Airtrain has removed 114 million vehicle kilometres from Brisbane’s road system during the first five years of Airtrain’s operations. During the same period more than 23.7 million kilograms of greenhouse gas were avoided by passengers using Airtrain.
The research also indicated that traffic speeds approaching Brisbane Airport would be up to 15% worse if these passengers used the road rather than Airtrain. Click here for a copy of the research.
To celebrate Airtrain’s fifth birthday and highlight the environmental advantages of Airtrain, Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman, unveiled The Green Train. This was the first occasion that a QR train had been painted in this way.
