Top international travel tips for first-time travellers

International travel is a thrilling milestone for first-timers, filled with promises of new adventures and memories that will last a lifetime. However, without prior experience and the right preparation, it can be daunting. From navigating passports and baggage restrictions to managing travel logistics, there’s a lot to consider. If you’re embarking on your first international trip, we’ve got you covered with our top international travel tips to get you on your way smoothly, safely and stress-free.

Check and organise important documents

Your passport is your gateway to the world, so the number one international travel tip for first-timers is to make sure it’s valid for your journey. Generally, passports need to have at least six months of validity, however each country is different and some countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the end of your planned stay. If in doubt, check well in advance. You should also research any visa requirements or entry restrictions (such as vaccinations) that are necessary prior to arriving at your destination. Another of our travel tips is to take physical copies of your passport, any visas and your travel insurance, and store them somewhere safe like a travel wallet or folder. Having a backup in case of loss or theft can save you from major hassles.

Arrange travel insurance

When travelling overseas, unexpected situations can quickly disrupt your trip – anything from a flight cancellation or lost luggage, to a medical emergency in a foreign country. To minimise disruption and stress during your travels it’s worthwhile arranging travel insurance in advance. There are travel insurance companies and plans for all types of budgets and needs. In a best-case scenario, you’ll enjoy peace of mind for the duration of your time abroad; in a worst-case scenario, you’ll have financial protection and practical support when you need it most.

Pack smart

One of the most overlooked international travel tips is the need to pack smart! There are two important aspects to packing for international travel – your checked baggage and carry on. For your checked baggage, pack according to the climate and planned activities. Avoid overpacking, particularly if you know you’ll have access to washing facilities throughout your trip, and where possible pack items of clothing that are quick to dry and don’t require ironing.

When it comes to carry on luggage, you should pack the things you absolutely can’t do without if the worst was the happen and your checked baggage gets lost during transit. Your carry on luggage should include your passport and any visas, essential medications, valuables like laptops or jewellery, phone charger and travel adapter, and ideally a spare change of clothes.

Understand baggage restrictions

Before arriving at the airport make sure you understand international baggage restrictions. Weight limits vary across airlines, so check your allowance with your airline to avoid last-minute excess baggage charges. We recommend weighing your bags either at home or at the airport before you check-in to ensure you’re compliant.

Unlike domestic flights, there are strict limitations that apply to the size and volume of liquids and aerosols in your carry on. You’re allowed to carry up to 100ml of each onto the flight, so prior to your journey purchase travel miniature essentials like deodorant, moisturiser and hand sanitiser. Full-size liquids and aerosols should be packed in your checked luggage.

Dress for comfort

International travel is a time to prioritise comfort over style. You’ll be sitting down for a long time, crammed among other passengers and subject to a range of temperatures prior to flying, on the plane and when you land. Wear (and pack in your carry on) layers that you can easily put on or remove and will adapt to varying climates. Stick to natural fabrics that are cool and breathable, such as cotton, linen and bamboo.
