Travel 101 with Airtrain: Facilities and services

Getting to and from the airport should feel seamless from the moment you step on board. In this edition of our Travel 101 with Airtrain series, we’re shining a light on the Airtrain facilities and services that make travel comfortable and accessible. From spacious carriages and onboard amenities to accessible facilities and services at the station, here’s what you can expect when you choose to travel with Airtrain.

What can I expect onboard Airtrain?

Travelling with Airtrain isn’t just about getting from A to B – it’s about enjoying reliable Airtrain services designed with passenger comfort in mind. Airtrain operates one of the most modern train fleets in Australia, supplied by Queensland Rail. These trains are equipped with LED screens installed to help you navigate your journey with ease.

All trains are fully air-conditioned, ensuring a comfortable ride during Queensland’s warm summer months. Free wi-fi is available at the Airtrain Domestic and International stations as well as on most trains, so you can check flight details, reply to emails or finalise last-minute travel plans while onboard.

Spacious, comfortable seating and generous luggage areas are key Airtrain facilities, giving you room to relax before or after your flight. Plus, along the elevated railway you can take in scenic views of Brisbane and surrounds between the Brisbane Airport and the city.

Can I travel with large luggage?

Airtrain carriages are designed with airport travellers in mind. The trains do not have overhead luggage storage however there is plenty of room within carriages to travel with your luggage, as well as wide aisles and easy access doors making it easy to move around on board with luggage.

At the Airtrain Domestic and International stations, platforms are level with train floor so you can wheel your luggage easily onto the train.

Is Airtrain wheelchair accessible?

Airtrain is committed to providing inclusive and accessible travel for all passengers, including those with specific needs or disabilities.

At both the Airtrain Domestic and International stations, lifts are available to help move between the terminals and the stations. The platform is purpose-built to accommodate passengers requiring wheelchair access, with the platform level with the train for easy access. Platform gap fillers have also been installed at all high-traffic and assisted boarding doors for increased safety.

Staff are available on the platform to provide assistance with embarking and disembarking the train. Once onboard Airtrain, you’ll find designated spaces for wheelchairs.

What other accessible Airtrain facilities and services are available?

Other facilities and services provided by Airtrain to enhance Brisbane Airport accessibility include:

  • Bathrooms: There are dedicated accessible bathrooms at Airtrain Domestic and International stations. These bathrooms feature automatic swing door operators, push buttons to open/close and privacy locks.
  • Hearing loop: T-Loop systems with braille translation are available at all Airtrain ticketing offices to boost the listening experience for those with hearing loss or who use a hearing aid.
  • Accessible seating: Trains are equipped with designated spaces for wheelchairs and mobility aids, along with priority seating for those who need it.
  • Companion Card: For passengers with a Companion Card, Airtrain allows one carer to travel free between Brisbane Airport and Brisbane City and suburban stations when travelling with the Companion Card holder. The Companion Card holder must have a valid Airtrain ticket to travel.
  • Hidden Disabilities Sunflower: Accessible Airtrain services also include the adoption of the Hidden Disability Sunflower to help support and raise awareness of those living with a hidden disability. Sunflower lanyards and wristbands are made available to passengers with a hidden disability as a subtle way of letting others know that they may require additional support, assistance or a bit more time.

We continuously upgrade our Brisbane airport accessibility features – keep an eye on our website for the latest Airtrain accessibility information.
