Two years of partnership with QIMR Berghofer

In a world where collaboration can spark real change, the partnership between Airtrain and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute stands as a powerful example of corporate and scientific communities coming together for a cause that touches thousands of lives: brain cancer research. Since launching our partnership in late 2023, we have worked hand-in-hand to raise awareness, drive donations and support groundbreaking medical research aimed at improving outcomes for patients facing one of the most complex and deadly forms of cancer.

A personal mission with public impact

The partnership was born from a deeply personal place. Airtrain CEO Chris Basche has been courageously battling brain cancer for over two decades, undergoing multiple surgeries, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. His story became the catalyst for Airtrain’s commitment to supporting brain cancer research, and QIMR Berghofer – Queensland’s largest medical research institute – was the perfect ally. With a world-class brain cancer program focused on adult and paediatric forms of the disease, QIMR Berghofer’s researchers are working tirelessly to develop new diagnostics and treatments, including promising immunotherapy approaches for aggressive cancers like glioblastoma.

Milestones that matter

Over the past two years, our partnership has achieved several impactful milestones. More than $XX has been raised through Airtrain’s innovative donation channels, including online ticket booking options, donation boxes at Brisbane Airport stations and go card balance contributions. These funds have gone directly to QIMR Berghofer to support life-saving research. Beyond fundraising, the partnership has amplified public awareness through campaigns like Grey May, social media outreach and email newsletters, helping to educate Australians about the realities of brain cancer and the urgent need for continued research. What’s more, in 2025 QIMR Berghofer celebrates is 80th anniversary – that’s 80 years of pioneering medical research, from infectious diseases and population health to mental health and cancer.

Looking ahead

As the partnership enters its third year, both Airtrain and QIMR Berghofer remain committed to their shared mission. We continue to use our platform to promote QIMR Berghofer’s work, while the institute pushes forward with innovative research that could transform treatment options and survival rates. With every dollar raised and every conversation sparked about brain cancer research, this collaboration is not just about corporate responsibility – it’s about hope, resilience and the belief that together, we can make a difference.
