AFL Finals Weekend in Brisbane

Celebrating Footy Finals Weekend in Brisbane

It’s a massive weekend for AFL fans across Australia, and this year Brisbane are the proud hosts of one of the most anticipated sporting events across the nation. There’s always plenty to see and do in the River City, but Brisbane is turning up the heat with AFL Footy Festival events providing food and drink, entertainment, and a whole lot of AFL atmosphere.

If you’re in Brisbane for the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final, be sure to check out the sights and get involved with the action. Whether you’ve got tickets for the game or are planning to join with other fans at the many events city-wide, here’s what you need to know to make the most of Footy Finals weekend in Brisbane.

Getting around

Airtrain will get you quickly and comfortably from the airport to Brisbane City in 20 minutes. To celebrate the first ever AFL Grand Final held in Brisbane we are offering a $25 return fare* for supporters between Brisbane Airport and the City. Just enter the promocode GRANDFINAL when booking to redeem this offer.

For those who are heading straight to the Gabba, your best choice is to stop at South Brisbane and take a short stroll to the stadium. If you’re stopping in Brisbane a little earlier to take in some of the sights, Airtrain stops at all city stations including Fortitude Valley, Central, Roma Street, and South Brisbane stations.

All Brisbane public transport uses a smart card for travel, or you can purchase a paper ticket. Short term visitors should check out the go seeQ card, which allows you unlimited travel for 3 or 5 consecutive days on buses, trains, ferries and trams. It also includes 2 Airtrain journeys to/from the Brisbane Airport. For longer stays, travel like the locals with a go card – just touch on at your station of departure and touch off when you arrive at your destination.

Spending the Weekend

If you’re in town with some time to spend, Airtrain have prepared some handy guides so you can make the most of your time in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

But the Footy Finals weekend is an extra special event, and Brisbane plans to celebrate in style with some exciting events to keep the most fervent fans entertained.

The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens will play host to a range of footy clinics, food stalls, pop-up shops and even player appearances across the weekend. A big screen will show the game so fans can get together and get behind their team. The City Botanic Gardens are only a 10 to 15-minute walk from the Central or Roma Street railway stations, and offer a beautiful way to spend the day and catch some footy fervor.

Throughout the weekend, the Queens Street Mall will be painted in AFL colours and will become a hub of AFL entertainment, with the City Sounds program covering the whole week. Fit some food and shopping in around your Finals celebrations, and see what one of Queensland’s premiere shopping destinations has to offer.

On the Saturday, Streets Beach in Southbank will also play host to some serious finals action, with food, music, atmosphere, entertainment, and of course – a big screen. There are plenty of things to see and do within a very easy walk along the Southbank stretch, and you can finish with a swim and the long-awaited final with other eager fans.
